AROVANE is the recording name of German electronic music artist Uwe Zahn (born 1965 in Hameln). His sound can be characterized as ethereal, melodic, organic, warm and ambient, yet technically involved with structured, often heavy, breakbeat- and hip-hop-influenced beats. Richly layered with synths and textured distortions, it focuses more on generating a melancholy, nostalgic feeling than on four-on-the-floor dance beats. The tempos are midrange, and Arovane has been labeled IDM by many.
Zahn first experimented with rudimentary audio equipment and keyboards at 15, even learning the clarinet at one point. In the late 80s he dealt increasingly with synthesizers, turntablism and the deconstruction of hip-hop beats, and in 1989 he began making music with S.A.M., a Munich collective dedicated to live, free, electronic improvisation. In 1991 he built his own studio in Berlin, where he lived throughout the 90s. After working for a radio station he caught the attention of the label Din; his first two EPs, Atol Scrap (Din) and Tides (CCO), brought him acclaim in the IDM, ambient and electronic scene, first in Germany and then worldwide.
After the productive early years of 1999 and 2000 came a collaboration with Phonem and the album Lilies in 2004. Its last track is called “Good Bye Forever”, and a nine-year hiatus followed, ending in 2013 with Ve Palor on n5MD. Although Arovane is well known among the “bedroom” techno and IDM communities, his music has not reached the same level of success in mainstream pop culture.
