MWM009 || Bunai Carus - Neend
The 2015 release Neend marked the Mindwaves Music debut for Bunai Carus, the collaborative project of Jeremy Louis and Guillaume Quet. Representing the seventh EP in their shared discography, the record serves as a definitive document of their research into the intersection of organic sound sources and digital deconstruction. Drawing from their backgrounds as instrumentalists, the duo utilized a sophisticated palette of field recordings and bespoke synthesis, heavily influenced by the intricate IDM aesthetics of the early millennium.
Neend is a conceptual work that navigates the tension between melodic warmth and rhythmic aggression. Over the course of thirty minutes, the EP transitions from atmospheric ambient passages to complex, “broken” beat structures characterized by highly textured percussion. A defining element of the release is the integration of orchestral string fragments, which provide a cinematic, acoustic counterpoint to the record’s crunchy, experimental core. The result is a melancholic and immersive travelogue that remains a standout example of Franco-Belgian electronic abstraction.
