MWM004 || Karsten Pflum - Slaphead Faun
Released in 2010, Slaphead Faun serves as both a retrospective and a stylistic manifesto for the Danish producer Karsten Pflum. The album functions as a curated collection of “bastard tunes” produced between 2002 and 2007—unreleased material that originated during the sessions for his early EPs and albums. By adopting his former moniker as the title for this record, Pflum bridges the gap between his experimental beginnings and his more sophisticated, contemporary sound design.
The tracks on Slaphead Faun showcase the full spectrum of Pflum’s versatile production style. The compositions range from the aggressive, drill-’n’-bass-inflected energy of “Thael Spir” to the delicate, almost magical atmosphere of “Computer Weekend.” The album highlights a clear evolution in his craft: while early pieces like “Tak 1” emphasize clever, catchy melodic structures, later works such as “Six Step Chase” incorporate more complex, equilibristic drum programming and glitchy, quirky textures.
