Mindcast.07 || DJ Scotch Bonnet

It's been a long time coming, but we've finally managed to entice Shigeru Ishihara aka DJ SCOTCH BONNET to spin some sounds for our podcast series. He's also the co-founder of the label, SMALL BUT HARD, so we're very happy and honored for this rare opportunity to plug into a fascinating, intelligent journey revealing musical influences and styles that cross cultures, continents and eras.

Also known for solo project DJ SCOTCH EGG, Ishihara is charged with a relentless energy and excess creativity. It was his chance meeting with MATSUNAGA KOHEI that triggered an isotopic explosion of activity. This culminated in a new dope style of distorted beats and bass that's now championed by the Small But Hard label.

Swapping GameBoys and 8-bits for a hefty distortion unit, Ishihara delves deep into the world of bass-driven hip-hop breaks. As DJ Scotch Bonnet, he melds dense beats with his signature pop sensibility, referencing SCORN, NHK and the dance music culture of new home-town, Berlin.

Shigeru Ishihara is a prolific artist with a repertoire of collaborations that has included productions for the epic psychedelic outfit, DRUM EYES. As well as playing bass for newly-reformed post-rock band, SEEFEEL, he's also co-produced scores for the dub-distortion unit, DEVILMAN.

There's never a dull moment when Shige is on the decks. He breaks the rules to interact and stimulate. So here, we experience his musical wisdom – making this a very special edition of the MINDCAST series. Enjoy.
