  • MINDCAST.50 // GRISCHA LICHTENBERGER - Mindcast Mixtape 09/2018

The author of our little MINDCAST.50 anniversary is the sophisticated GRISCHA LICHTENBERGER who created an intriguing and diverse mix, including lot’s of material from his own archives.

Grischa Lichtenberger (* 1983 in Bielefeld) is a producer of electronic music, installation and multimedia artist.
Since 2009, his works appear among others on the renowned label Raster-Noton and he was awarded with an honorable mention at the Ars Electronica back in 2013.
Grischa also composed for the Batsheva Dance Company in Tel Aviv the music for the choreography 'Last Work' by Ohad Naharin.

Lichtenberger has presented his audiovisual live show at prestigious international festivals and concerts (including Elektra and Mutek Montreal, Electron Festival Geneva, Sou Festival Tbilisi, A l'Arme Festival Berlin) and his installation and visual works have also been realized nationally and internationally (including 2011 Enjoy Art-Space Leeds, 2012 Grimmuseum Berlin, 2013 Atonal Berlin, 2015 Tokonoma Kassel, 2016 Gallery Unofficial Preview Seoul Korea).
The artistic works of Grischa Lichtenberger are characterized by a combination of rawness and refinement, prudence and intimacy. From an archival combination of approaches, he develops complex reflections on the conditions of artistic production, so that the border areas of the various genres in which he moves are blurred and come into contact with each other.
Dance, club culture and pop collide with an individual aesthetic that can equally be found in museum architecture, in the living room, in techno clubs or concert halls.
Lichtenberger's sprawling periods of artistic work include philosophical reflections, drawings, paintings and sculptures, as well as musical compositions.

Grischa is looking forward to a busy year 2019 with several releases planned, including the concluding second part of the five-release series "la demeure / il y a pÈril en la demeure", which deals with a double-bind of the voice between intimacy / identity and heteronomy / otherness.

We're very delighted and proud that Grischa found the time to create this exclusive anniversary mix for us. Here are a few words from him about this compilation:
The mix deals with distortion. Various examples from my own archive and pieces that I appreciate. The distortion is maybe a good example for a significance of technology beyond its functionality. On the one hand, the distortion is always a kind of musical taboo, a border of the concept of music itself, an unwanted by-product. On the other hand youth culture, rock 'n' roll, punk, hardcore, grunge, noise - they all have shared a certain appreciation for distortion. What they intent/intended with distortion is not the 'soundquality of analogue saturation' (as is the word today), but a certain de-symbolisation of musical functionality, that they have found reflected in their misuse of technology. (...) if a soundwave is at its peak-level, even in digital systems, it's not only flattened. artefacts are beeing reflected back into the acoustic material. one could say that alias-effect, theoretical clippingspikes and distortion are a transcendental process of the material. thus technology, not only has the sole purpose to lead to a more effective use of material, but regenerates a relation to the material, in this sense reality (with all its implication of gravity and significance as a historical relation)."
